I've been totally remiss in the whole shameless commerce department. My newest book came out almost two months ago and I've been too busy to even tell you about it -- you, who actually care! It's terrible that I go speak at these writers' conferences, telling them that book promotion is largely their job and that when they have finished writing the book, they are only half-finished with the whole process of publishing the book. (I never really follow my own advice, but that doesn't mean it's not good advice.)
Anyway, I co-wrote this book on sacred sites with my friend Mark Ogilbee. A couple of days ago, the Salt Lake Tribune ran this really nice feature story on the book and some of the destinations we cover. Mark was a terrific collaborator and doing the book was a joy, though of course last year was awfully insane and it was a challenge just to find time to write. I wound up doing only four chapters plus the introduction. My favorite chapter to write was Graceland (yes, that Graceland); in fact I think it is one of the best pieces I've ever done.
So here's to you, St. Elvis. I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since you died. Even though I was just a little kid, I have this vivid memory that my dachsund died right around the same time, and I knew that all of the people crying and holding candles on TV were sad about my dog. It was good of them to care so much. I miss you both -- the fussy dachsund and the self-tortured hound dog. May you rest in peace.
I'm reading it now. It's wonderful!
